The Museums Federation Cymru stands in full solidarity with the Museums Association and colleagues across the UK in condemning the recent racist violence that has caused deep harm and distress within our sector and our communities.
Museums in Wales are committed to being safe, inclusive spaces for everyone. Racism has no place in our institutions, our workforce, or our society. We recognise the profound impact that racist violence has on staff, volunteers, and communities, and we extend our support to all those affected.
Wales has set a clear national direction through the Anti‑racist Wales Action Plan, which calls for proactive, systemic change across public life. As a sector, we reaffirm our commitment to this work: challenging racism, addressing structural inequalities, and ensuring that our museums reflect and serve the diverse communities of Wales.
Dr Ken Griffin, President, said: “We also want to reaffirm our strong support for the Museums Association’s work on decolonising museums. This guidance has been vital in helping Welsh museums engage honestly with the histories in their care and in supporting ethical, community‑led practice. We hope that the Minister will continue to champion and resource the professional advice and frameworks that enable this work to progress confidently across Wales.” The Federation will continue to work with partners, including the Museums Association, Welsh Government, and sector networks, to support anti‑racist practice, strengthen workforce confidence, and ensure that museums contribute meaningfully to a fairer, more inclusive Wales.
